Overview
BelGaN Oudenaarde was a gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductor foundry created in 2023 when an investor group acquired onsemi's former 150mm/200mm wafer fab in Oudenaarde, East Flanders. The venture aimed to convert the site into an automotive-qualified GaN foundry but could not raise sufficient follow-on investment; facing high energy and labour costs, BelGaN filed for bankruptcy in July 2024, ending production and leaving more than 440 employees without work. In 2025 the bankruptcy trustees sold the plant to Thema Foundries, a newly formed company backed by a Flemish investor group and the Israeli integrated-photonics firm New Photonics, which plans to invest up to 250 million euros to reopen the site as a photonic integrated circuit manufacturing, packaging and test centre. Key facility details include: It focuses on GaN, Analog / Power and 180, 350 process nodes on 150mm, 200mm wafers. This site represents a production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month. Production had been targeted for 2022 before the project was cancelled.
