Overview

The LAPIS Semiconductor Miyazaki Plant in Kiyotake-cho, Miyazaki was established as Miyazaki OKI Electric on November 21, 1980; its M1 (4-inch) fab started operation in 1981 producing 64Kb DRAM. The M2 (5-inch) fab followed in 1984 with 256Kb DRAM and the M3 (6-inch) fab in 1991 with 4Mb DRAM. The plant launched its foundry business in 1997 and diversified into LCD drivers, power ICs, silicon-on-sapphire RF CMOS, MEMS piezo inkjet heads and non-volatile memory through the 2000s. OKI's semiconductor division was carved out and merged into the ROHM Group in 2008, and the site was renamed LAPIS Semiconductor Miyazaki in 2011. Automotive IGBT/FRD production with ROHM started in 2015 and SiC device process development in 2018. Today it operates as a 6-inch LSI wafer foundry within the ROHM Group.
