Overview
The Lampertheim site dates to 1921 as a general Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) electrical engineering plant, initially producing large mercury-vapor rectifiers (current converters for steel mills, rail networks, and broadcasting). Semiconductor technology -- standardized silicon thyristor rectifiers -- replaced the mercury-vapor process there in the 1960s, a transition BBC helped pioneer. IXYS acquired this power semiconductor wafer fab and automated module manufacturing operation from ABB (BBC's 1988 successor) in 1989, forming IXYS Semiconductor GmbH; Littelfuse acquired IXYS, including this site, in 2018. The ~170,000 sq ft facility remains one of Europe's largest suppliers of rectifiers, thyristors, and IGBT modules.
