Overview
Microchip announced 3 December 2024 that it would close this legacy Tempe wafer fab (Fab 2), affecting about 500 workers, with closure expected by September 2025 and production transferred to Fabs 4 (Gresham, OR) and 5 (Colorado Springs, CO), saving ~$90 million annually. In March 2025 the company engaged Macquarie Group to market and sell the facility. Fab 2 was a ~379,000 sq ft site with Class 10 fabrication modules producing 8-inch wafers on 0.35 to 5.0 micron processes; 8-inch production commenced in early fiscal 1998, and Chandler Fab 1's 6-inch processes were folded into Fab 2 in 2003.
