Overview
Sandia's MESA facility, on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, is the only US semiconductor fab with co-located silicon CMOS, silicon photonics, and III-V compound semiconductor production capability. Spanning 400,000 sqft of cleanrooms and labs, it supports National Nuclear Security Administration and Department of Defense microelectronics needs, including rad-hard CMOS and compound semiconductor devices. The $518 million, 400,000 sq ft MESA complex was completed in 2007 after eight years of construction, three years ahead of schedule and $40 million under budget; its 65,000 sq ft MESAfab pairs a Class 1 silicon fab processing 6-inch wafers with a Class 10/100 MicroFab for compound semiconductor processing.
