Overview
Cree Research was founded on this Durham, North Carolina site in 1987 and shipped the first commercial silicon carbide wafer from it in 1991. The 150mm (6-inch) SiC device fabrication line remained in production for decades, but after a June 2024 equipment-related capacity incident and weak industrial/energy demand, Wolfspeed announced it would close the facility and shift device manufacturing to its newer 200mm Mohawk Valley, New York fab; per the company's FY2026 Form 10-K, the 150mm Durham device fab was closed during the period ended 28 June 2026. Wolfspeed's silicon carbide materials/epitaxy operations and corporate headquarters remain at the same Durham campus, which is tracked separately from this now-closed device-fab line. Key facility details include: The facility is situated at 4600 Silicon Drive, Durham, NC 27703, USA. It focuses on Analog / Power, Compound Semiconductor on 150mm wafers. Production had been targeted for 1987 before the project was cancelled.
