Overview

A joint venture between Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC to mass-produce next-generation image sensors for smartphones at a newly constructed Sony fab in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, near the TSMC-controlled JASM logic fabs. On August 11, 2026 the two companies signed a legally binding definitive agreement (upgrading the non-binding May 8, 2026 memorandum of understanding) to establish the JV as "Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation." Sony Semiconductor Solutions is the sole controlling shareholder and the JV will be a consolidated subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. Sony is contributing approximately 465 billion yen (through cash and the transfer of the newly built Koshi fab, in which it has already invested) and TSMC approximately 282 billion yen in cash, with additional investment planned subject to Japanese government support. Combined investment across the venture and related Nagasaki capacity is reported at roughly US$6.3-6.4 billion (~JPY1 trillion). Volume production of advanced-process image sensors (reportedly including sensors for Apple iPhones) is targeted for 2029, with longer-term ambitions in "physical AI" applications such as automotive and robotics.
