Overview
BYD Semiconductor Jinan operates through subsidiary BYD Jinan Energen Semiconductor, in which BYD acquired a 77.75% stake for CNY 5 billion (~US$775 million) in 2021 (Energen was originally co-founded with Foxconn in 2018). Energen invested CNY 6 billion (~US$0.9 billion) building fabs in the first phase of a three-phase plan. It produces 8-inch silicon and SiC chips, with the Jinan government holding a minority stake. BYD Semiconductor Co., Ltd. is the semiconductor subsidiary of Chinese EV giant BYD Company, tracing back to BYD's IC design department founded in 2002. Following its 2008 acquisition of Ningbo SinoMos, BYD Semiconductor became a vertically-integrated IDM (design through manufacturing) and is the largest domestic supplier of automotive IGBT modules in China, also producing battery-management chips, MCUs, sensors, and optoelectronics for BYD's vehicles and external customers.
