Overview
Skyworks' Woburn, Massachusetts campus is the former home of Alpha Industries, which operated a GaAs semiconductor wafer fabrication facility there for microwave and RF wireless applications. By September 1999 the fab had completed an expansion that doubled capacity; a follow-up equipment upgrade announced that December (a second ASML PAS 5500/100 stepper) aimed to double capacity again by mid-2000, and by then over 90% of the facility's manufacturing capacity was already 6-inch (150mm) compatible, up from the original 4-inch (100mm) GaAs wafers, enabling a future transition to larger wafers. Skyworks Solutions was formed in 2002 through the merger of Alpha Industries and Conexant Systems' wireless communications business, and Woburn became the combined company's headquarters. Per Skyworks' own SEC filings, the owned Woburn site is designated 'corporate headquarters and manufacturing,' part of the company's roughly 760,000 sq ft of owned U.S. office and manufacturing space, distinct from the company's other GaAs wafer fab in Newbury Park, California. In August 2025, Skyworks announced plans to close wafer fabrication at Woburn and consolidate that manufacturing into its Newbury Park, California fab, aiming to raise fab utilization and lower fixed costs; per the company's FY2025 Form 10-K the wind-down was still in progress, with Last Time Buy notices issued to customers for various Woburn-fabricated parts extending into 2026-2027.
